You Will Love When Instagram Removes Likes

Vanity metrics such as “likes” and followers” are crippling creative people and narrowing down the type of content they are willing to produce. Once you see one type of content outperforming the rest of your posts, people tend to go one dimensional and only make that piece of content, which hurts creativity and the platform.

So glad that I came across this video. As an author who is on various social media platforms, I lost the plot trying to understand what the heck I m supposed to be giving out. I'm self published and all I want to do is create because I'm a creative. There's so much involved behind the scenes that takes away from that process. I'm in the middle of sculpting what I want my brand to be and I 100% get your thought process. I'm excited now, you have a new fan. Instagram here I come. (Under a pen name)

Oh My Gosh! INCREDIBLE!!! I have not used my IG account for 10 months with 9K followers because I felt stifled for posting what my creative side was. If they really do follow through and remove likes, then I am all over IG. So excited!!!!

Still don't believe instagram is doing it for "You" or the "creativity". The thing is: with all the likes and followers public and the value it comes with it, way too many influencers where born and will be born. They are not the problem but them making huge fucking amounts of money off of instagram and them not earning shit from it, THAT is bothering them. So take away the likes and people have less validation, less money will flow, so I bet my ass instagram is gonna come up with a "solution" for them so they can also profit off of it…

How will the algorithms work from an entrepreneur stand point?

Personal accounts it makes sense for mental health.

Love Chase Jarvis! 💕 love his spread of creativity.😊

“You can’t stand out and fit in at the same time.” Come on somebody, love it! Just be you. 🙌💪👍

I've been enjoying Instagram so much more without "likes" I post more and engage more with my followers and the people I follow ♥️♥️♥️ thank you for sharing Gary xo

Instagram has removed likes for Canadian accounts a couple of months ago. While I might not see the likes count, I still have to like the content I wish to see on my feed. As for the posts that get recommended to me, it’s still those with lots of likes and comments. And I’m still bombarded with ads.

I started using the platform in early 2011, and it really helped me a lot in learning more about photography. Back then the feed was chronological, and there were no ads (or stupid stories). There were also no fake/ s*itty accounts DMing me to buy their products or follow them. Likes were never the problem. If you think you’re more creative without likes, the problem is ego. If you think Instagram removing the likes count will improve your mental health, you should see a specialist.

Says the guys with no physique. Dude says a million words to not make a point. "If you've got a product find a good way to sell it" the underlying topic to every piece of watered down content Gary delivers

Do you think instagram are taking away likes because ppl cottoned onto the fact they can buy engagement without having to run a paid ad? I say this because i know that if you hit 10% engagement of your audience within the first few minutes of posting and sustain that 10% then your post stays trending until it drops below 10%. So you can make yourself look to others like your doing it organicaly instead of having to run a paid, which inevitabley (if thats how you f#cking spell it) makes you look like a small fry? PLEASE GARY YOUR THOUGHTS???

I think removing likes it’s definitely a good step but I still think of all the other metrics and new ways people will still limit their own creativity. We will get used to no likes very fast and the same issues people had regarding likes will still be there.

I can see the benefit, but I also feel like it's taking away something brands and small businesses have worked for. Whether it should be true or not, people pay attention the number of likes on a post. It represents a sort of capital. There is a psychological element that causes people to respect, follow and like something that already has many likes. It catches the eye. I dont mind it myself because I think that the nature of social media marketing is to roll with the ever-evolving landscape. Instagram itself will be dead within a few years I'm sure. But I do think it takes something away from people who've churned out content for years and earned that spot.

What do you do when you make content that feels really right, and is about documenting, but no one seems to be paying attention? I'm in it for 50 years… I just wonder if there is a way to tell if it's resonating, or if that doesn't even matter?

  15. Seek Ye First Knowledge

Let's be real, they're removing likes because so many people no longer post because their photo's don't get likes. It's about getting more participation from their users, not about making them post more creative content.

The like button was the worst and most dangerous social media invention of all time. I remember when black planet and myspace didn't have like buttons.

  16. Robert Wimer

Let’s get rid of the likes, thumbs up/thumbs down, and view count for the viewer on YouTube, but leave those statistics for the creator so they can see what is working. I am all for getting rid of that, and all forms of social proofing.

  17. joseph King

Whats next lets hide trophies from winners so everyone feels comfortable playing. Who cares about likes especially when the same tired booty pics get all the likes anyway ?

  18. Michael Gorman

Eradicate "vanity metrics" and I think social media will gain strength and stop being such a cesspit of narcissism and trivial bullshit, there is huge potential being misused out there.

  19. Eric Whitaker

Hey Gary, I am a marketing manager with comp plans that involve the amount of likes and shares I get per month on our social content. Now that this is going away, what metrics should we use to evaluate success as it relates to marketing and comp plans? Should there even be a comp plan?

  20. Whats That?

For businesses who use influencers and pages for marketing it'll be hard to evaluate and audit their stats. So it could hurt business wise. Personal wise it's good

Wow. Garyvee you just opened up my brain. I just started my youtube and I have been trying to beat the algorithm. But on my instagram I don't do that and took time to build the brand. Great advice for me to do the same here on youtube. 👏👏👏
